Happy Thaipusam

Would like to wish my friends a Happy Thaipusam!

-a preparation for Thaipusam being done in front of Murugan Koveal (Murugan Temple) Kuala Lipis

Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (January/February). The word Thaipusam is derived from the month name Thai and Pusam, which refers to a star that is at its highest point during the festival.

These two photos were shot on October last year at the 'Hanyut' movie set. A film directed by U-Wei and adapted from Joseph Conrad's novel, Almayer's Folly . Hopefully this film will be srcreened this year.

Originally this building was the residence for the British Officer. The British began to build this building in 1926. However, when Menteri Besar post was created in 1948, this building has been beautify and renovated to make YAB Menteri Besar Pahang official residence. Below were list of Menteri Besar Pahang believed to have stayed in this house :

Dato' Setia Wangsa Sir Mahmud bin Mat (MCS., OBE)
- 1 February 1948 to 1 February 1951

YAM. Tengku Panglima Perang Tengku Muhammad Ibni Al Marhum Sultan Ahmad (CBE) - 1 February 1951 to 1 February 1955 /
- 15 June 1955 to 8 January 1957

Orang Kaya Indera Shah Bandar Dato' Abdul Razak bin Dato' Hussien (MCS)
- 1 February 1955 to 15 June 1955

As in the list above, Menteri Besar resided the house until 1955. This was due to the transfer of Pahang State Capital from Kuala Lipis to Kuantan on the following year.

Among the historic event that has been carried out in this palace was Wedding Ceremony of KDYMM Sultan Pahang and KDYMM Tengku Ampuan Hajah Afzan binti Tengku Mohamad on 22 April 1954. According to some Village Chief' that we met, this palace is a symbol of King Sovereignty and National Unity. ( source and more pics click : MDL's page).

Masa kecik2 dulu aku dan rakan2 rajin cucuk kemuncup kat ekor sesibo nih. Lepas tu kami bersorak2 seronok tengok ia terbang dan menjunam jatuh kebumi seperti helikopter Amerika ditembak askar Jerman dalam cerita Combat kat tivi. Bebudak zaman sekarang dah tak main sebegini. Sekurang-kurangnya tak menyiksa binatang ye t...ak?

house of former secretary

A house where Pahang Darul Makmur's State Secretary stayed. This historic house was completed in 1920.

Our current Prime Minister, Dato' Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, was born and brought up here. His father, the late Tun Abdul Razak used to reside in this house when he was the Secretary for the government of Pahang.

Sungai Jelai
Dulu suasananya meriah dengan agenda kehidupan
warga Kuala Lipis.
Ia merupakan laluan perhubungan para
penduduk kampung-kampung di persisirannya.
Di dada arusnya sibuk hilir mudik perahu-perahu
Enjin Sangkut,bagi bot-bot yang beratap ianya
dikenali dengan perahu kajang.
Semasa itu kebanyakan jabatan kerajaan di daerah
Kuala Lipis banyak mengunakan perahu-perahu kajang
ini sebagai pengankutan rasmi jabatan apabila mereka
punyai urusan di kampong-kampun persisiran,kerana
Sungai Jelai merupakan lebuh raya penghubung.
Sepekara lagi di tebing Sungai Jelai bahagian
Bandar Lipis banyak rumah-rumah rakit menjadi
hiasan lanskapnya.
Namun kini semuanya itu bagaikan telah
ditelan kabus nipis sang waktu.
Edaran masa telah menelan lenyapkannya,
atas nama pembangunan “Charming”Kuala Lipis telah calar.
Jelai kini sepi dan sunyi bagaikan tanah kuburan
Setelah usai upacara perkebumian.Sayu dan sendu.
Bagi saya yang tersisa di minda hanya
sebuah catatan kenagan.Irama “Yesterday Once More”

Lemang

Lemang is my most favourite dish during Hari Raya or Eid.

Lemang is a traditional glutinous rice food and dish that is always found and served during the Eid. Commonly it is served with chicken or beef rendang.

It is made of glutinous rice and coconut milk and cooked in a hollowed bamboo stick lined with banana leaves in order to prevent the rice from sticking to the bamboo.

eid mubarak

My daughter expressed her spirit of celebrating the coming Eid or Hari Raya by playing with fireworks.

Eid ul-Fitr is coming again in a week time. It marks the end of Ramadhan or a month of fasting. Eid is an Arabic word meaning "festivity", while Fiṭr means "to purify"; and so the holiday symbolizes the purification after completing the fasting month which is after the end of the Islamic month of Ramadhan, on the first day of Syawal.

Right now most of the Malaysians are heading to their kampung to celebrate eid with their beloved families. And for those who will travel back to Lipis ( or other places) and celebrate with their family, I wish that they drive safely. Get enough sleep before you travel.

I will celebrate eid with my family in Kedah. So that i don't have the chance to shoot or photograph the celebration in Kuala Lipis.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all muslim friends Selamat Hari Raya Aidilifitri.

Selamat Hari Merdeka ke-53

Hari Merdeka is the Independence Day of Malaysia. It is a national holiday which is celebrated on 31 August every year. It is to commemorate the independence of the Federation of Malaya from British colonial rule on 31 August 1957.

Today is the 53rd anniversary of Malaysian independence.

Selamat Menyambut Hari Kemerdekaan yang ke-53 untuk semua.

“…whoever draws nearer (to Allah) by performing any of the (optional) good deeds in (this month) shall receive the same reward as performing an obligatory deed at any other time, and whoever discharges an obligatory deed in (this month) shall receive the reward of performing seventy obligations at any other time... ” [Narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah]

Allah promises us to give blessings when we do good deeds at any time of the year. But during ramadhan He will give extra blessings (bonus). Most of us will do sunat prayer, reciting quran, zikr, donation and many more good deeds.

zakat al-fitr

Zakaat al-Fitr is charity given to the poor at the end of the fasting in the month of Ramadhan. The main purpose of Zakat al-Fitr is to provide the poor with a means with which they can celebrate Eidul Fitr along with the rest of the Muslims.

The rate of zakaat for this year is RM7.00 per person.

Have you paid your zakaat? If not , don't forget to do it before eidul prayer!

Bazar Ramadhan - Benta

Every year bazar ramadhan has been organised widely nationwide by the local authority. It's held constantly throughout ramadhan.

There is a variety of foods sold from a simple type of traditional malay kuih to exclusive Malaysian cuisines.

Most of the muslims generally break their fast by eating dates. Science has proved that dates are one of the healthy diet. They contain natural fibres, sugar, fat and proteins.

Pahang Lin Siong

Buses are among the main public transport available in Kuala Lipis.

The most common bus used in Kuala Lipis is Pahang Lin Siong. The buses travel everyday from Kuala Lipis town to other towns such as Jerantut and Raub.

Pahang Lin Siong was formed in 1938.

Salam Ramadhan al-mubarak to all muslim readers who celebrate fasting days today.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and sexual activities from dawn until sunset. Fasting is intended to teach Muslims about patience, humility and spirituality and is a time for Muslims to fast for the sake of Allah and to offer more prayer than usual. (more in wikipedia)

The blessings of Ramadan are not limited to fasting alone, because the performance of all sorts of worship and good deeds during this month is also a source of great Divine favor.

Nurse Hostel

This building was built in 1926. Since that this hostel became the accommodation for nurses and student nurses in Kuala Lipis Hospital.

roti canai

a unique roti canai stall located at Level 3 of Lipis Centerpoint.

Roti canai or prata bread is a form of puffed bread serverd hot with curry or dhal. Usually taken for breakfast together with teh tarik.

Lately there are various improvements (with additional ingredients) used on plain roti to suit Malaysians. For example roti telur bawang (eggs and onions), roti planta (butter), roti sardin, roti bawang (onions), roti tampal ( sticked eggs) and so on.

Mr. Pietra and his wife, the tourists from Austria, are relaxing after having their roti sardin.
