PM is coming to Kuala Lipis

Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato` Seri Mohd. Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, was born in Kuala Lipis. He is the eldest of Prime Minister Abdul Razak's six sons.

This Saturday (20th March) he will come to Kuala Lipis to officiate the 50th anniversary of the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development.

The event will be held for three days effective from 19-21st march 2010. Kuala Lipis will be packed with the outsiders from all over Malaysia to celebrate this anniversary.

By the look of the tents, Kuala Lipis is fully ready to welcome other Malaysians to this town.

Weaver ants or Green ants (genus Oecophylla) are eusocial insects of the family Formicidae (order Hymenoptera). Weaver ants are obligately arboreal and are known for their unique nest building behaviour where workers construct nests by weaving together leaves using larval silk. (wikipedia)

Because of their aggressive behaviour, weaver ants are sometime used by indigenous farmers, particularly in southeast Asia, as natural biocontrol agents against agricultural pests. Although Oecophylla weaver ants lack a functional sting they can inflict painful bites and often spray formic acid directly at the bite wound resulting in intense discomfort.

In our language we call the weaver ants as KERENGGA.

rubber estate

Every tree of a rubber estate is carefully looked after. Rubber is planted from the seedlings, and becomes ready for tapping in 6 or 7 years.

Tapping is done by wounding the bark of the rubber trees. It is done by making a cut at between one and a half metres from the ground at an angle of about 30° to the horizontal. The cut is about 2 mm. deep.

Tapping starts before six in the morning, and the collection of latex is completely before noon.

past and present

i. the old picture was taken in 1950's. i'm not so sure about the exact year. the location was at the back of the Malay Hostel, Clifford School. but now this hostel has become the school's administration office.
ii. the old picture was taken in 1926 in front of the Malay Hostel.

iii. a group of local people at a Benta cinema in 1955. In 1980's this cinema was demolished and replaced with community hall. Benta is small town located 30 km from Kuala Lipis.

iv. A big flood that happened in 1971. Many places in Malaysia was flooded and Benta was one of the area affected. The old picture shows that the locals rafted along the main road of Benta.

petai

Parkia speciosa (petai, bitter bean,sataw, twisted cluster bean, yongchaa, yongchaak, zawngtah or stink bean), is a plant of the genus Parkia in the family Fabaceae. It bears long, flat edible beans with bright green seeds the size and shape of plump almonds which have a rather peculiar smell, characterised by some as being similar to that added to methane gas. Petai ni memang kesukaan aku. Kalau petai jeruk tu aku ratah je. Tak payah makan dengan nasi. Pernah juga aku makan petai jeruk dengan aiskrim vanilla. Haha!

Berdasarkan kajian, buah petai yang berbintil-bintil pada papannya dikatakan mengandungi kadar protein dan lemak yang tinggi berbanding tumbuhan hutan yang lain, iaitu sebanyak 8 peratus, 11 peratus karbohidrat, 71% air, banyak mengandungi kalsium, fosforus, zat besi, vitamin A, B1, B2 dan C.

Sebenarnya kandungan pemakanan biji petai berbeza mengikut umur dan kesegaran bijinya. Buah petai yang kecut ataupun bijinya tidak membulat mempunyai kandungan khasiatnya kurang. Dalam perubatan tradisional Melayu, biji petai dipercayai berkesan untuk merawat penyakit jantung dan penyakit kencing manis, mencuci buah pinggang, serta untuk mengeluarkan cacing daripada kanak-kanak yang kecacingan.

This building was used as a school hostel. But now it is an administration office.

This school was built in 1913. The founder of this school is V.N. Bartlett. He was born in Ceylon and became the first school principal.

In 1928, Sir Hugh Clifford launched this school and this school was named after him.

In Malaysian language it is called Sekolah Menengah Clifford.
